Student Privacy

Content Design & Strategy, 2017 and 2022

Overview and Problem

Student privacy is a huge deal for schools, but turning stuffy and dense policies into practical advice is a real challenge. My task was to bridge that gap by creating clear social media best practices for teachers.

Process and Solution

I worked closely with the privacy evaluations team at Common Sense to translate their expertise into easy-to-understand tips. To make sure the work reached the widest possible audience, I led a cross-functional team (design, marketing, product) that crafted a multichannel content campaign that was flexible, modular, and easy to reformat. The final package was anchored by an infographic but supported by an article, video, and suite of social images. Each element of the campaign was aimed at funneling users back to the Common Sense website where they could grab our curricular resources and sign up for our site or newsletter.

Results and Impact

We got the campaign in front of millions of teachers by syndicating it on Edutopia. For such a fast moving space, the content has also had a remarkably long shelf life.

Based on user feedback, and internal discussion, my team and I updated the infographic and article in 2022. We shifted from a do’s and don’ts format to more positive, proactive guidance.

The revised version is still being distributed through Apple education and hosted on Common Sense’s sites.
